Hospital Supplies

Hospital Supplies aren't just for hospitals. Many individuals as well as self-employed health care professionals find themselves in need of hospital supplies. While hospitals usually employ purchasing services or relegate supply purchasing to a specialized internal department, individuals must choose the equipment and the supplies they need on their own. Buying these health care supplies does not have to be complicated. You may find your biggest challenge is making a purchasing decision from a very large selection.

Types of Hospital Supplies

Hospital supplies range from inconsequential items such as scrubs or shoes, to large investments such as lasers and MRI machines. Some of the most common health care supplies on the market are used by individuals in their own homes. People with diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and many other chronic illnesses rely on medical equipment every day. While these people would have had to go to a hospital for treatment in the past, they are now able to stay in their own homes or with family and receive the treatment they need.

Oxygen machines, ventilators, nebulizers, wheelchairs, hospital beds, commodes, walkers, crutches and rehabilitation products are very common hospital supplies sought by individuals. Products such as uniforms, lab coats, stethoscopes, medical bags, blood pressure devices and cleaning supplies are among the common necessities of doctors, dentists, medical assistants and nurses who may not be supplied with these items by an employer.

Choosing Hospital Supplies

If you are employed by a hospital or are a self-employed health care professional, there are many conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions that can guide you through emerging technologies and help you find the best suppliers and supplies to fit your needs. There are also comprehensive directories online as well as industry periodicals that can help.

If you are an individual, you will need to go a different route. Normally your doctor will tell you what supplies you need and help you find the necessary supplies to fit your needs and your budget. In most cases, you will need a referral from your doctor to purchase hospital supplies.

Most medical supply companies will accept many forms of insurance and will deliver your supplies to your home. These companies may even have a health care specialist who can visit you to make sure you have set up your equipment properly as well as ensure that it is in good working condition.

Purchasing

Do your research before you make your purchases. Chances are your doctor has a handful of suppliers he or she routinely refers patients to. However, you always have the right and the opportunity to do your own comparison shopping. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions and be persistent until all of your questions are answered.

If you are a health care professional, talking with colleagues may be helpful in determining what supplies and suppliers will best fit your needs. Take the time to speak with representatives of the companies from which you are looking. The more you know, the happier you will be with your purchase and the better your health or your patients' health will be because of it.
