DMAE is a chemical compound which gained notoriety during the 90's as a safe, natural brain stimulant. DMAE, also known as Deanol, is a precursor of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter and found in fish, particularly sardines and anchovies. It is found in small deposits in the brain, and stimulates choline production. Choline then optimizes the brain's production of acetycholine, which is the brain's main neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory.

Benefits of DMAE

Studies done on DMAE have shown mostly positive results, demonstrating increases in alertness and attention. DMAE therapy has been successful in cases of childhood learning and behavior disorders, specifically involving issues of protracted attention spans such as in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This disorder is being increasingly diagnosed by doctors as causing issues for adults, and studies have indicated DMAE effectiveness in treating these disorders as they present in both children and adults, and may indicated for problems associated with underachieving, short attention spans, hyperactivity, reading and speech difficulties, and antisocial and delinquent behavior. Acytocholine is essential in learning and memory, and while it is not yet proven, DMAE may be successful in ADHD and ADHD-like syndromes due to its ability to assist acytocholine's role in memory function.

Memory Aid and Life Extension

The severe memory loss of Alzheimer's disease is partially a result of the lowering of acetycholine levels in the brain due to the loss of acetycholine producing brain cells. Since many of the drugs that doctors prescribe in treating this condition boost acetycholine levels, DMAE may offer benefits to short-term memory loss. Users have reported improved concentration, mental clarity, and better sleep. It is thought that anything that aids mental functioning by preventing or reversing the aging of the brain may extend to the other body systems, and lead to better overall health and well being. It is reasonable to expect an organism to live longer if they enjoy a better state of health.

DMAE Dosage

Experts recommend starting with low dosages of DMAE. It can over-stimulate the nervous system – causing headaches, anxiety, drowsiness, and tension in the neck, jaw, legs, and general body. If side effects develop, stop the supplement for a day to allow your system to adapt before continuing again at a lower dose. Symptoms usually disappear by reducing dosage. If symptoms persist, discontinue using the product. Beneficial effects may not be noticeable for several weeks. While older individual are usually able to take larger doses of DMAE, they do respond differently than younger people do to drugs and supplements, and should consult their medical doctor to discuss any potential drug interferences with DMAE prior to initiating use.
